چکیده

We discuss CSS radio galaxies from 2 samples of radio sources. The rst sample is a complete sample of 28 3CR galaxies with redshifts in the range 0:6 < z < 1:8 for which we have HST, UKIRT and VLA imaging data. The 2 CSS galaxies contained in this sample, 3C49 and 3C241, appear to be less active than galaxies with radio sizes of order 50{100 kpc, but similar in activity to galaxies with radio sizes larger than 100 kpc. This is interpreted as being due to the rise and fall of a starburst that is induced by the radio jet as it passes through the galaxy. The underlying hosting galaxies of the two CSS sources seem not to be diierent from the other galaxies in the sample. Their dust content, stellar masses, de Vaucouleurs radii and location on the fundamental plane are all typical for the galaxies of the whole sample. We argue that the simplest interpretation is that the CSS sources are simply the youngest radio sources in the sample. The second sample is a representative sample of ultra-luminous radio galaxies with a narrow range in radio power, but a wide range in redshift (0 < z < 4:3). VLA imaging of this sample indicates that the percentage of CSS galaxies is 10 % and does not depend on redshift. The median angular size evolves as LAS median (1 + z) ?1:20:3. Assuming that the size of the radio sources is dictated by ram pressure, this is interpreted as due to the gas density within the galaxy being roughly constant over this large range of redshift, but the density outside the galaxy evolving as (1 + z) 3 .

Lyman-α absorption: links between CSS quasars and high-redshift radio galaxies

Spectroscopy of high-redshift compact steep-spectrum (CSS) quasars shows a high incidence of Ly-α absorption close to the quasar redshift (zabs ≈ zem). Associated absorption systems like these are rare in other types of radio sources, with the notable exception of high-redshift radio galaxies (HZRGs). CSS quasars and HZRGs share many properties; the hypothesis that they are intrinsically simila...

The black hole mass , Eddington ratio , and M bh − σ [ O III ] relation in young radio galaxies

The masses of the central supermassive black holes and the Eddington ratios for a sample of 65 young radio galaxies [27 gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) and 38 compact steepspectrum (CSS) sources] are estimated by various methods. We find that the average BH mass of these young radio galaxies is ≃ 8.3, which is less than that of radio loud QSOs and low redshift radio galaxies (≃ ...

Clues on the nature of Compact Steep Spectrum radio sources from optical spectroscopy

New long-slit spectra are presented for a group of Compact-Steep-Spectrum (CSS) sources (i.e. powerful radio sources with sub-galactic size and steep spectral index at high radio frequencies) selected from the southern (δ < 10◦) 2-Jy sample of radio sources with redshift limit of z = 0.7. Their spectra are strong in emission lines (e.g. [O III]λ5007 and [O II]λ3727), as expected for such powerf...

Project: Multicolour Studying of Distant Radio Galaxies

Powerful radio galaxies belong to the population of massive stellar systems that can be picked at high redshifts. With measured redshift, morphology and age determination these objects can help greatly in understanding of the way of formation and evolution of giant elliptical galaxies with massive Black Holes in the Early Universe. We presents some recent results of study of the sample of 105 f...

ISO observations of a sample of Compact Steep Spectrum and GHz Peaked Spectrum Radio Galaxies

We present results from observations obtained with ISOPHOT, on board the ISO satellite, of a representative sample of seventeen CSS/GPS radio galaxies and of a control sample of sixteen extended radio galaxies spanning similar ranges in redshift (0.2 ≤ z ≤ 0.8) and radio luminosity (P2.7GHz ≥ 10 W/Hz). The observations have been performed at λ = 60, 90, 174 and 200 μm. The original purpose of t...
